IndiGo and Air India

A fierce competition for experienced pilots has erupted between IndiGo and the Air India Group following disruptions linked to the new Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) rules. To prevent a repeat of recent scheduling chaos, IndiGo has assured the DGCA it will induct 100 pilots in January, while Air India has launched a fresh recruitment drive.

Both carriers are grappling with a wave of captain resignations, driven by poaching between domestic rivals and lucrative offers from foreign airlines. Senior industry officials say experienced captains are receiving calls with joining bonuses of up to ₹50 lakh, intensifying the hiring scramble.

With stricter FDTL norms tightening the availability of seasoned pilots, airlines are racing to maintain existing strength rather than expand. The shortage has pushed traditionally cost-focused HR departments on the defensive, marking one of the most intense talent battles ever seen in Indian aviation.
